Absolutely — and it's the ideal setup. Use virtual ground school or checkride prep now to sharpen your knowledge and oral exam skills. When the Austin AATD opens in January 2027, you'll walk in with strong systems knowledge and your oral exam prep done, and you can focus the simulator time entirely on procedural proficiency and scenario work.
Significantly. AATD time is priced well below aircraft rental, with no fuel costs, no maintenance delays, and no weather cancellations. For IFR proficiency work, you get far more training value per dollar in the simulator than you do flying approaches in actual IMC conditions — both because of the lower hourly cost and because you can repeat scenarios without burning fuel.
